SPA WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW

by Ho Hoffman 23. June 2014 12:04

TENNESSEE TWITTY SENIOR EVENT TOPS FORTY TEAMS

HENDERSONVILLE, TENNESSEE – The SPA women's program continues to grow.

After drawing thirty-seven teams to Pensacola earlier this year, the JUNE 2014 SPA TWITTY event attracted FORTY-FOUR teams to HENDERSONVILLE'S DRAKES CREEK PARK complex.

Let's give credit where credit is due,” SPA President RIDGE HOOKS said, “Our organization (SPA) is fortunate to have people like DON CHERRY (Twitty tournament director), NANCY VEAHMAN (National Women's Assistant Director), JUDY LEE SCHREIBER (National Women's Director) and MIKE DESORBO (Pensacola Tournament Director).”

Tournament attendance doesn't just happen, it takes efforts by the people in charge of these tournaments to not only put on a quality event but also encourage teams to attend these events,” HOOKS added, “Those four people and the others who are in the background helping them is what is making SPA the top women's senior softball program in the Country.”

The TWITTY TOURNAMENT, in addition to the FORTY-FOUR teams, had fourteen states and the province of Ontario represented with the 70-major CALIFORNIA SPIRIT coming the longest way.

Forty-four teams from fourteen states and Canada is pretty impressive for any tournament either men or women,” Tournament Director CHERRY said, “We are hoping that teams like the CALIFORNIA SPIRIT and MISSOURI teams will spread the word out west what SPA is doing for women's softball and hopefully we can get more teams from the west to attend the mid-west and southern tournaments as well as the DALTON WORLDS.”

If that happens,” CHERRY continued, “SPA could possible start holding women's events out west. Another thing once teams realize SPA welcomes teams of all ages (35-and-up) to all their tournaments, I would expect seeing FIFTY teams at a SPA women's tournament will be common and not an exception.”

At HENDERSONVILLE, champions were crowned in eleven different brackets.

The two largest brackets were the seven-team 50 and 65 MAJOR groups.

The FUN BUNCH won all three of their bracket games to earn the MARYLAND girls the 65-MAJOR title. On the way to the podium, FUN BUNCH beat VIRGINA'S GOLDEN GIRLS 5-1, FLORIDA'S GOLDEN GALS 17-9 and the GOLDEN GIRLS 6-3 in the title game.

Others in the bracket were CANADA'S GREY POWER, JOLICO 65'S of MICHIGAN, SMOKEY MOUNTAIN STARS (TN) and BLUE CHICKS (DEL)

The 50-MAJOR bracket saw the DREAMGIRLZ (VA) outscore the opposition 61-26 in three bracket games to take home the top prize. Finishing second to the VIRGINIA team was the VOLUNTEER STATES SERIOUS FUN.

Rounding out the bracket were PHENOMENAL LADIES (VA), JOLICO 50'S (MICH), TENNESSEE STARS, LADY LOOKOUTS (TN) and GOLDEN GIRLS 50 (VA).

ARKANSAS SYNERGY beat PRIME TIME LADIES (TN) 32-12 in the “IF” game to claim the 35-bracket crown, PRIME TIME LADIES forced the “IF” game by handing the champs their only loss by a 19-18 count.

The third team in the group was ARKANSAS JWP.

In a pair of best two-out-of-three contests, SHOW ME 50'S (MO) after losing the opener 12-4 to SASSY SR's came back to win 12-6 and 16-9 over the SOUTH CAROLINA squad for the 50 AAA title.

Another MISSOURI team, the MISSOURI FLASHBACKS won the 60AAA crown beating the SOUTHERN STARS (TN) 11-9 and 18-6 to win the crown,

The 40'S BRACKET saw LADIES FIRST (MD) rebound from losing their first game in bracket play to KRYTONITE (10-20) and bounce back to win the “IF” game over the FLORIDA team 19-13 and with it the championship.

The other two teams in the 40's group were PAY IT FORWARD (FLA) and CHICKS WITH STICKS (TN).

A quartet of teams went after the 55 MAJOR CROWN but when the dust settled it was the JOLICO 55'S (MICH) standing alone at the top.

It wasn't easy for the MICHIGAN gals as they had to fight their way out of the loser's bracket edging NOR EASTERS (CT) 8-7 and then the MARYLAND ROADRUNNERS twice (13-8,20-11) before being crowned champs.

MISSOURI'S SHOW ME 55's rounded out the bracket.

The JOLICO organization took home it's second title of the tournament as the JOLICO 60's won the 60 MAJOR three-team division beating OHIO CARDINALS (7-2) and FUN BUNCH (MO) 23-4.

The CALIFORNIA SPIRIT made their cross-country trek worthwhile as they ran the 70 MAJOR bracket going 3-0 with wins over BLUE CHICKS (DEL) 17-2, GOLDEN GALS (FLA) 13-6 and GOLDEN GALS again, this time 14-11.

The fourth team in the group was the SPORTACULARS (ONTARIO,CAN).

VIRGINIA'S GOLDEN GIRLS won their 70 AAA title the hard way. The champs lost their bracket opener 13-15 to the CHATTANOOGA CHARGERS, fought back through the loser's bracket beating the CLASSICS (KY) 7-2 and CHATTANOOGA twice 18-3 and 18-8 to take home the top prize.

NW MOUNTAIN MAMAS (WVA) rounded out the four-team bracket.

FLORIDA'S FREEDOM SPIRIT went 3-0 in bracket play beating the THOROUGHBREDS (KY) 15-0, and the GOLDEN GIRLS (VA) twice (17-2 and 14-2) to claim the four-team 75'S CROWN.

The TENNESSEE STARS was the fourth member of the quartet..

Only two SPA WOMEN'S TOURNAMENTS are left on the agenda before the SEPTEMBER WORLDS in DALTON, GEORGIA comes around.

Next tournament is the ROCKY TOP WOMEN'S MASTERS & SENIOR NIT, JULY 9-13 at the CASWELL SOFTBALL COMPLEX in KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.

The ROCKY TOP event will be followed by the PARADIASE IN THE VILLAGES NIT tournament AUGUST 20-24 at the SBUFFALO GLEN COMPLEX.

PENSACOLA WOMENS' SPRING NATIONALS ON THE RISE

by Ho Hoffman 14. May 2014 12:20

          TOURNAMENTS CLIMBS TO THIRTY-SEVEN TEAMS

PENSACOLA, FORIDA - Five years ago the SPA PENSACOLA WOMENS' SPRING NATIONALS drew ELEVEN TEAMS. This year THIRTY-SEVEN squads competed at EXCHANGE PARK April 10-13, which was also an increase of NINE from last year that had SPA TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR MIKE DE SORBO beaming with pride.

This tournament continues to grow and is turning into a great success,” DE SORBO said, “ Much of the success can be attributed to the high marks received for the outstanding playing field conditions, great umpires, park amenities, honoring the suggestions from teams and players and of course the high performance level the women's teams have shown the past five years”

This year was no exception to the “high performance level” DE SORBO raved about as NINE DIVISON CHAMPIONS were crowned in the exciting competitive games.

KRYPTONITE started the action off besting ARKANSAS SYNERGY 20-4 and 18-5 to capture the 35/40 crown in a best-two-of-three showdown.

The PENSACOLA LADIES duplicated KRYPTONITE'S effort disposing of CHICKS WITH STICKS 23-17 and 29-13 in their two-of-three battle for the 40/45 title.

In the THREE TEAM 50 AAA bracket, LADY LOOKOUTS swept ROCKIN ROBINS 20-12 and 22-7 for the championship. The ROBINS were able to fly into the finals by beating LA SPORTS 16-14.

SIX TEAMS showed their stuff in the 50 MAJOR DIVISION with the DREAM GIRLZ hoisting the FIRST PLACE TROPHY after beating the TENNESSEE STARS in the title game.

THE DREAM GIRLZ defeated JOLICO 50's 16-10 and SERIOUS FUN 20-3 on the way to the championship game. The TENNESSEE STARS defeated JOLICO 50's 5-1 to come out of the loser's bracket for their trip to the finals.

Others in the bracket were SUNNY BEACHES and MOTOWN MAGIC.

FIVES were alive as FIVE teams battled for the title of the 55 DIVISION.

SUNNY BEACHES 55's won the DOUBLE-NICKEL title beating the MARYLAND ROADRUNNERS 12-1 in the title game.

The SUNNY BEACHES 55's reached the big game by first knocking off SHO ME 55's 17-16 and the ROADRUNNERS in an earlier game 16-14.

The MARYLAND team made it out of the loser's bracket by beating the JOLICO 55's 12-1. The FIFTH team in the bracket was FLORIDA LIGHTNING.

The 60's BRACKET saw JOLICO 60's fight back to win the “IF” game over FUN BUNCH 13-0. The FUN BUNCH had forced the “IF” game by beating JOLICO 8-6. In an earlier bracket game between the two it was JOLICO on top 8-3 after taking no prisoners against SOUTHERN STARS.30-14.

The FUN BUNCH beat SOUTHERN STARS 17-10 to earn their second shot at JOLICO.

One of the tournament's three biggest group showed up in the 65 DIVISION where six teams laced up their cleats to battle it out for the title.

The team which had the most fun was FUN BUNCH as they swept all three opponents in bracket play. JOLLICO 65's lost in the title game 12-3 while the GOLDEN GALS (15-8) and JOLICO (8-3) earlier definitely did not have any fun

The JOLICO 65's, however got their money's worth in the tournament when after losing their opening bracket play game they fought their way out of the loser's bracket on the way to the finals beating SAINTS EXPRESS 15-10 and the GOLDEN GALS 3-2.

Others in the bracket were SMOKEY MOUNTAIN STARS and GOLDEN GIRLS.

The third SIX TEAM BRACKET was the 70'S Division.

The GOLDEN GALS breezed through the competition beating OHIO TRI-STARS 23-15, SPORTACULARS 16-7 and TRI-STARS again, this time in the finals 18-4.

The BUCKEYE STATE Ladies fought their way back out of the loser's bracket by sending the THOROUGHBREDS (24-7) and SPORTACULARS (11-8) to the sidelines. Rounding out the bracket were GOLDEN GIRLS and NW MOUNTAIN MAMAS.

It was FREEDOM SPIRIT taking the four team 75 DIVISION by defeating GOLDEN GIRLS 18-0 in the title game. The GOLDEN GIRLS had fought their way to the finals forcing an “IF” game beating the SPIRIT 6-5.

Prior to that after losing their opening bracket game 4-3 to the THOROUGHBREDS, they strung together wins over TENNESSEE SENIOR STARS (10-3) and THOROUGHBREDS (11-5).

Before losing to the GOLDEN GIRLS the FREEDOM SPIRIT had defeated the THOROUGHBREDS 15-2 and TENNESSEE STARS 10-5.

It was a great tournament,” De SORBO concluded, “I expect the 2015 event to be even better.”

Rounding out the six team 65+ bracket were KENTUCKY FILLIES, BLUE CHICKS, GOLDEN GIRLS 65'S and SMOKEY MOUNTAIN STARS.
