SIX DIVISION CHAMPIONS CROWNED IN MAY TOURNAMENT

 

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – TWENTY-THREE teams turned out for TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR MIKE DESORBO'S MAY 16-19 event as SIX CHAMPIONS were crowned in the PENSECOLA MEN'S SPA SOUTHERN NIT.

IF” games were the order of the day as half of brackets ended up going to an “IF” game to decide the champion.

In the 50 MAJOR contest RANDY SMITH forced an “IF” game by defeating ADIKTIVE SPORTS 31-29; but it was to no avail as ADIKTIVE SPORTS won the deciding game 33-`18.

ADIKTIVE SPORTS ended up with a two games-to-one edge over RANDY SMITH in bracket play having sent the SMITH gang to the loser's bracket earlier with a 34-30 win,

SOUTHERN ELITE and CRYSTAL PHARMACY rounded out the four team field.

In another “IF” game decider it was FMSI edging the HITMEN 15-14 for the 60 AAA crown. The HITMEN forced the “IF” game with a 21-20 win over FMSI.

FMSI had sent the HITMEN to the loser's bracket earlier in the tournament by a 31-13 score. Other teams in the four-team bracket were COLUMBUS LX and MEMHIS VETS.

The third “IF” game saw the LA LEGENDS fight their way through the loser's bracket to defeat CUSTOM GRAPHICS 23-7 and 21-12 to claim the 65 AAA crown. CUSTOM GRAPHICS had sent the LEGENDS to the loser's bracket earlier in the day with a 9-7 win.

The LEGENDS just barely made it to the showdown with the GRAPHICS boys having to nose out EXTREME HEAT 25-24 to advance. ED'S ALUMINUM, TENNESSEE RV and BORDER STATES also participated in the six-team field.

GA/AL took no prisoners as they went unscathed through the 55 AAA bracket. The GA/AL squad beat DIXIE SENIORS 26-17 in the title game. The CARDIAC KIDS, PENSACOLA 55's and T.A.G. Completed the five-team bracket.

In a pair of best two-out-of three showdowns, the MOUNTAIN TOPPERS beat SEGURA FARM 12-11 and 12-9 for the 70+ title while the PENSACOLA RIPTIDE disposed of the GEORGIA MISMATCH 20-7 and 22-15 for the 75+ crown.

SPA NEBRASKA HALF-CENTURY BRINGS OUT THE REAL SENIORS

     65'S, 70'S, 75'S TEAMS PARTICPATE IN MAY EVENT

 

COUNCIL BLUFFS, NEBRASKA - It was an “official” senior softball tournament held at the COUNCIL BLUFFS RECREATION COMPLEX May 7-8 with only the 65, 70 and 75 divisions participating in the annual event.

Not only did the TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR DAVE BANGHART check SPA PLAYER cards but also might have taken a quick look at MEDICARE cards  as ELEVEN teams played in the SPA NEBRASKA HALF-CENTURY SOFTBALL challenge TOURNAMENT.

Taking the SENIOR “senior's division” was JIMMY”S MINNESOTA GOLD, who edged out the CHICAGO GEEZERS on a tie-breaker decider.

Both teams were even in overall record (4-2) and split the two games against each other. The difference came down to JIMMY”S beating the GEEZERS 23-16 and only losing by a 20-15 count, a two-run difference.

The MA PATRIOTS (3-3) and the K.C. ANTIQUES (1-5) completed the four-team field.

In the 70 DIVISION, KNAPHEIDE picked the right time to win games going 2-4 overall (against 65 and 70 teams) but 2-1 against the 70's. Both KNAPHEIDE and the MINNESOTA MASTERS (4-2) tied in DIVISION play at 2-1 but in head-to-head play KNAPHEIDE beat the MASTERS 23-12.

The CENTRAL 70's and COLORADO COUGARS finished at 1-2 in 70's DIVISION play to round out the field.

SCRAP IRON (6-0) was the only team to go undefeated in the event and easily won the 65's DIVISION. MW EXPRESS finished second with CAR CITY in third.

SIX TEAMS GET THEIR TITLE KICKS AT ROUTE 66 TOURNAMENT

    SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI SITE FOR SPA ROUTE 66 NIT

 

SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI - Sixteen teams went after their “kicks” at the SPA ROUTE 66 NIT held at SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI'S KILLIAN COMPLEX MAY 16-19. When the dust cleared only six were able to high step to the trophy table.

TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR MIKE TAYLOR passed out championship awards to co-champs SILVER SNEAKERS (70's) and KNAPHEID (70'S); BALE CHEVROLET (65'S); NATURALS (60'S); CENTRAL ILLINOIS CHIEFS (55'S) and MIDWEST CARDS (50'S).

The SILVER SNEAKERS made a late run at the 70's crown, coming out of the loser's bracket winning three straight after losing it's bracket opener. In their fourth game of the day they beat previously undefeated KNAPHEIDE to force an "IF" game. Due to time constraints the TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS decided to award the SILVER SNEAKERS and KNAPHEIDE the co-championship title.

HARRIS AUCTION and CRACKER BOX also participated in the four-team 70's group.

BALE CHEVROLET edged U.S.PALLET 65's 15-14 in winning the 65's title. The PALLET gang reached the finals with a 21-16 win over CARRIAGE HOMES. K.C. FIRE was the fourth team in the field.

The 50's title game saw MIDWEST CARDS down the X-JOCKS 29-11 for the top spot. The CARDS had also beaten the JOCKS 31-26 in a second round game which sent the JOCKS to the loser's bracket.

The X-JOCKS made it to the championship game by edging TEN CATS 23-22. The fourth team in the bracket was DEALERS TRIM.

In a two-out-of-three showdown, the NATURALS swept K.C. THUNDER 24-17 and 26-21 for the 60's TITLE. The CENTRAL ILLINOIS CHIEFS also had out the brooms in the 55's DIVISION beating the K.C.MONARCHS 13-6 and 27-12 for the crown.

All teams who finished first and/or second in the 2013 SPA ROUTE 66 NIT earned spots in the SPA 2013 WORLD SERIES in the HOUSTON, TEXAS SPORTSPLEX OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 3, 2013..

DAYTON FIRST FLIGHT CROWNS SIX CHAMPIONS

   SPA OHIO TOURNAMENT WORKS AROUND RAIN PROBLEM

DAYTON – Even the rain couldn't dampen the THIRD ANNUAL SPA DAYTON FIRST FLIGHT TOURNAMENT held MAY 16-19 at the KETTERING FIELD COMPLEX.

TWENTY-FOUR teams went at it in the six division play with the home town LEGENDS teams winning two of the titles, both in the AA group.

The DAYTON LEGENDS 70's AA edged the CENTRAL OHIO 70'S 8-6 in the title game of the 70's AA championship. Other teams in the four-team gathering were SYLVANIA 70's and the DORCHESTER CANADIANS,

In the 65 AA DIVISION the DAYTON LEGENDS beat SYLVANIA two straight in the best-of-three showdown to capture the 65 AA crown. The LEGENDS downed SYLVANIA 12-5 and 18-11 in the two games.

The BRICKYARD CLASSICS kept the LEGENDS ORGANIZATION from having a tournament hat trick by beating the 50's AAA LEGENDS 24-9 in the championship game of the six-team 50 AAA DIVISION.

Other teams in the bracket were the EAST WEST OUTLAWS, UNIVERSAL MECHANICAL, WINDSOR FOG and SYLVANIA EAGLES.

The GOLDEN VIPERS claimed the 55 AAA TITLE defeating the ANTIQUES ROADSHOW 22-13 in the championship battled. ALLSHRED/ PACESETTER came in third.

The 65 AAA championship went to COLUMBUS, OHIO's UNIVERSAL/COSSA 65's who edged SPORTS LETTERING 10-7 in the title game. WRIGHT STATE ORTHOPEDICS was the third team in the group.

In the five-team 60's AAA battle, it was MIAMI LAKES SPORTS coming out on top with a 23-16 win over the DAYTON LEGENDS in the championship battle. Other teams in the group were the MID-STATE SENIORS, DAYTON CLASSICS and BRICKYARD CLASSICS.

We had the entire 65 and 70 pool play games rained out on Thursday, so we went straight to bracket play on Friday, “SPA REGIONAL DIRECTOR LARRY MILLIRON said, “ Teams drew for seeding and it worked out nicely. SHORTY (BREWER) and LOUIE (DESARO) did a nice job in conducting the tournament and I really think next year will be their best tournament yet.”

SPA HOUSTON LONE STAR TOURNAMENT A HIT

               FIRST YEAR TOURNAMENT DRAWS 24 TEAMS

 

HOUSTON, TEXAS – The SPA FIRST YEAR LONE STAR NIT TOURNAMENT held at the HOUSTON SPORTSPLEX had a successful entry into senior softball drawing TWENTY-FOUR teams to the MAY 2-5 event.

The tournament, which incidentally was held at the same site of the OCTOBER SPA MENS WORLD SERIES SHOWDOWN, crowned SEVEN DIVISION CAHAMPIONS.

It was a great start for this tournament,” TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR and SPA ASSISTANT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LAYLA BRYAN said, “We had a lot of exciting games and the teams really seemed to be enjoying themselves. I really think the LONE STAR TOURNAMENT can develop into one of the biggest and best tournaments in the southwest.”

No team seemed to enjoy themselves more than the LOUISIANA LAKE CHARLES LAKERS, who took the 50AAA GOLD TITLE edging the (TEXAS) BULLETS 24-23 in the title game. Making games interesting was the MO for the LAKERS throughout the tournament as they also got by the (TEXAS) BUCS 28-24 and the BULLETS 23-22 in an earlier game.

The BULLETS downed the BUCS 26-20 to reach the final game. The (TEXAS) MIXED BREED completed the four-team field.

Five teams squared-off in the 50's MAJOR PLATINUM DIVISION with WOOD LAW running the table finishing off the run with an 18-3 victory over AUSTIN ROCKS. WOOD LAW also beat RANDY SMITH LA SOFTBALL 32-22 and AUSTIN ROCKS 33-18 in an earlier bracket game.

AUSTIN ROCKS downed RANDY SMITH 32-19 to reach the title game. GONZALES INSULATION and NHS NEWAY HENDRICKS SPORTS were the other two teams in the bracket.

It was a “hot” time in the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME of the 55 GOLD DIVISION as the HOUSTON FIRE burned the TEXAS HEAT 26-24 for the crown. The FIRE also beat the third team in the bracket, SENIOR TEAM HOUSTON 21-16.

The HEAT reached the title game with a 24-21 win over TEAM HOUSTON.

The three-team 60 GOLD DIVISION saw TEXAS LONE STAR beat both of the other two combatants in the group to take the crown. The CHAMPS knocked off OOPS twice, 22-13 in the title game and 20-19 in a second-round game. The TEXAS THUNDER lost to both LONE STARS (23-22) and OOPS (16-14).

The (TEXAS) WHIRLY BIRDS GURU were flying high in downing the (TEXAS) LEFTOVERS 53-26 and 27-19 to take the two-team 65/70 TITLE.

The 70 GOLD DIVISION saw five teams battle it out for the CROWN, with HILL CONTRACTING coming out on top beating the TEXAS CLASSICS 20-19 in the finale. HILL also had a tough game in the tournament opener as they barely got by the TEXAS GREYHOUNDS 27-26. The SAN ANTONIO CRACKERS was their third victim 21-16.

The CLASSICS reached the finals with a 20-15 win over the CRACKERS. SECURA FARMS of LOUISIANNA rounded out the field.

THE SAN ANTONIO CRACKERS beat the TEXAN'S 75's twice, 21-16 and 21-14 to win the 75+ championship.

Ho Hoffman of Wadsworth,Ohio is a sports writer for the Medina (Ohio) Gazette daily newspaper. Hoffman also has been playing competitive softball for nearly sixty years and 3,000 games starting in the adult fast pitch leagues as a teenager and continuing through into today's 70's senior division.  

Hoffman for the past twenty years has also been playing on senior softball travel teams. In addition, he along with Red Bole are the tournament directors of the highly successful SPA Ohio Buckeye Classic June senior softball tournament which last year drew 77 teams, in the 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75 AA and AAA only divisions. 

He is also married. He and his wife Sue have three sons who are also active in softball and baseball. The youngest Matt plays adult slo-pitch softball, Mike plays Roy Hobbs 40-and over baseball and Marc is the founder, owner and president of U.S. Baseball Academy, the nation's largest baseball training program.
